Pet Turf in Pickering: Durability & Hygiene Evidence Review

Summary

This report reviews the published evidence on pet-rated artificial turf for Pickering households with dogs: what distinguishes pet-specific products, how drainage claims compare with Pickering's rainfall, what published guidance says about odour, bacteria and wear, how the surface behaves through a Durham winter, and what ten years of ownership costs against a natural lawn under dog traffic. It is a desk-research evidence review; every figure is drawn from the cited public sources or derived from them using the assumptions stated in the methodology section. We find that pet-specific differentiation is real but narrow: ForeverLawn's K9Grass publishes a knitted, flow-through backing rated at 1,500 to 3,000 inches per hour, AlphaSan antimicrobial built into the blades, and a 15-year warranty on its Elite line, all product-level claims, not category standards. Drainage design must accommodate recorded extremes such as the GTA storms of July and August 2024, which together caused over $1 billion in insured damage across the region. A 300 sq ft pet run installs for $5,400 at published GTA rates and breaks even in approximately 3.1 years against a professionally serviced natural lawn with dogs, but not against do-it-yourself care, where what it purchases is roughly 22 hours of owner time per season and an end to the spring re-sod cycle.
